Our Projects

Our learners have collaborated with our instructors to animate stories they have written. We have also created a film about five Barloworld Empowerment Foundation community partners.

Dream park island
Story Summary

Dream Park Island follows the stories of Lilian, an aspiring artist whose mother wants her to do science, and Kiara, who dreams of rebuilding the island, starting with a new school. Kiara’s attempts fall flat in the face of an inactive community. The young girls endeavour to use music to advance their dream and they successfully inspire the community but their efforts are undermined by corrupt island leadership.

About the project

The goal of Active Revision’s Animation Program with this project was to collaborate with our learners in creating a 15-minute film entirely written by them. To bring this vision to life, we launched a competition across the organization, encouraging stories that reflect issues impacting the learners’ communities and their aspirations for the future. The winning story, combined with the runner-up, became Dream Park Island—a project that brought all our learners together to contribute their creativity. The Dream Park project is just the beginning; with sequels planned, we chose the island setting to give our learners a vast, imaginative world inspired by their unique backgrounds and dreams.

Dream park island: Vision Drivers
Story Summary

Vision Drivers continues the Dream Park Island story, following Kiara, Lilian, and Mandisa as they dive into the thrilling world of racing. Created by Active Revision learners aged 10 to 17, this project—like Dream Park Island—was written, recorded, and animated by our talented young creators. Guided by their instructors, they collaborated to bring this story to life, showcasing their creativity, teamwork, and passion for storytelling.

About the project

Building on the success of our first Dream Park Island project, we’re excited to expand even further! This latest film has grown not only in length, from 15 to 20 minutes, but also in its enhanced graphics. Yet, the most significant evolution lies in our vision for Dream Park Island: we’re setting the stage for an immersive, interactive story that bridges both animation and game development.

With this release, we’re inviting our learners to dive into game development. The Dream Park Island story will now unfold through both film and an upcoming car racing game, where you can experience the island’s rich culture, meet its unique characters, and race through its vibrant landscapes. This film serves as your first glimpse into a much larger narrative, offering a preview of what’s next as we deepen the stories of our characters and give you, the viewer, a chance to become part of the adventure!

Planet Barlo
Story Summary

Planet Barlo tells a story of a young man in search of inspiration which is in low supply on Earth. He is looking to solve problems of food shortage, drought and general low morale faced by his world. As a tech enthusiast, he believes his problems can be addressed through technology found on Planet Barlo.

About the project

Barloworld Empowerment Foundation wanted to give people an idea of what its beneficiaries, the non-profit organizations were doing. From multiples of NGOs we were asked to pick five and tell their stories. Our instructor was given total creative control. There was no script or directives beyond “tell a story of five of our beneficiaries”. We wrote the script inspired by the foundations logo and mission as well as the work of the five organizations. We then modelled all the necessary 3D models for the story in Blender, the software we use for our lessons.
From there, We recorded the voice-over, animated and edited what became Planet Barlo.

Dream park - faces of riverlea
Story summary

Dream Park – Faces of Riverlea follows the story of two friends who ride a whirlwind like a rollercoaster and atop the ride they see the park in Reverlea differently, it has more resources and rides. The whole community is better, but it is all just a dream.

About the project

Dream Park – Faces of Riverlea is a prequel of Dream Park Island. When we first introduced animation in our organization, we were looking for stories affecting our beneficiaries in their communities. Our beneficiaries were aged between 10-13 and wanted to say something about the new park that was under contraction in their hometown of Reverlea at the time. Along with that, we got to know more about that township and out of this project, a new vision was born. Dream Park is no longer just about the community of Riverlea, it is now about all the youth in South Africa and beyond. That is what this 5 minutes film have inspired, starting with Dream Park Island.
